In the late 1960’s, the Jaguar Land Rover Group started a marketing program where a team of Land Rover Ltd. specialists demonstrated the off-road driving capabilities of its product.

The skill of these Instructors in off-road driving, their product knowledge and their experience in working closely with auto industry journalists over the years, helped to build their reputation for being “the best in the business” in demonstrating off-road driving skills. Supported by this reputation, the Land Rover Experience platform, in the marketing role it has today, started to take shape in the late 1990s when John Lloyd and his associates began to craft it into a viable business strategy.

In 2019, when John retired, there were over 65 experience operations in place with more than one million Guests a year actively participating in Jaguar and Land Rover experience programs around the world. Since then, like many businesses that rely upon personal contact in the interaction between the service provider and the customer, the Guest experience model has had to adapt in the Covid era. For example, most Guest learning programs are now delivered using a vehicle convoy format. Guests and instructors drive in separate vehicles and learning is delivered through two-way radio contact.
